Nerdy Birdy Tweets

Nerdy Birdy Tweets‘ is a great picture book written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Matt Davies. It tells the story about two completely different birds, but Vulture and Nerdy Birdy are best friends. Nerdy Birdy is tiny, wears glasses, and enjoys playing video games, while big o’ Vulture thinks games are boring just like Nerdy Birdy thinks snacking on dead things is disgusting. They both enjoy taking goofy pictures of each other and making fun of each other’s lunch.

This is a wonderful picture book, because of how realistic and entertaining the author wrote it. The realistic component of it is the main one. Nerdy Birdy was so caught up in his cell phone, that he forgot about his best friend’s feelings, which actually happens quite a bit in the modern world. Personally, I can connect to this quite strongly. Almost everyone in Grade 7 has at least one Instagram account, and occasionally, I would see people post things that embarrasses their friends. And I understand that the internet can affect your life positively or negatively. Unlike Nerdy Birdy, I haven’t forgotten about the people around me, but I still enjoy messaging and posting on social media. And I know a lot of people can relate to me. The story is also entertaining to read because the author changed the real name of a brand, such as Apple™, to something else in the same category, like ‘Banana’. Reynolds named ‘Tweetster’ after Twitter™, and ‘Angry Worms’ after Angry Birds™.

Overall, this book uses simple language but gives out a powerful and unique message. I recommend this to anyone who uses the internet. Although you may not be addicted yet, it would still be useful to know the potential outcomes of the internet.
